Cead Mile Failte

The Heiress was 8 years old when she started dancing in her little homemade skirt and shawl. She couldn't wait to get her first pair of hard shoes. On the weekend before St Patrick's Day, the kids would get on a bus and they would literally run into pubs, dance, then run back onto the bus. They would do this from late morning until midnight and yet they looked forward to it every year. Every St Patrick's Day, the kids would be in the pubs again clapping and dancing until late into the evening. And this was at a time when people smoked in the establishments, oh how they reeked! Those kids worked so hard for their medals and trophies during competitions but on St Patrick's Day the dancing was all about having fun.

  1. She looks beautiful!! None of my girls did Irish Step Dancing...they were all ballerinas until it was given up in favor of sports (for 2 of them) or music (twin B). Their friends did the competitions though. A couple even competed internationally. Happy St. Patrick's Day!

  2. JoAnn, Ballet practice would be so much quieter around the house! We had a wood stage floor in the basement, add in the hard shoe and you could forget a quiet evening.

  4. That is impressive. I love watching Irish dancers. It amazes me that they can dance with their upper bodies so straight. It sounds like fun, but too bad it wasn's smoke free then!
